LIVERNOIS LT1 GEN V CAM TIMING LIMITER

VVT (Variable Valve Timing) systems do an incredible job with efficiency, by adjusting the Camshaft timing.  Retarding and advancing the cam timing helps to make certain your modern engine is running peak horsepower, regardless of engine RPM.  Though this makes for great performance throughout the entire powerband, it does pose a problem with limitations on larger camshafts.  As the camshaft timing fluctuates, piston-to-valve clearance decreases.  The further retarded or advanced the cam adjusts the less clearance to be had.  This reduces the amount of options to choose from when selecting a new cam.  Too much lift, and the pistons crash into the valves. 

To battle this, it has become commonplace to remove or “lock-out” the VVT system in modern engines.  Thus keeping the cam timing in one place and freeing up valve clearance.  Though that does solve one problem, there is a downside… sacrificing low and mid-range power.  Hi-horsepower race cars are not typically affected by this.  But for street driven musclecars are.  For years, this has been the unfortunate trade-off.   Decent power throughout… or  great power at high RPM, with lack-luster performance down low.
